More recent studies have shown that the guiding of action is limited to the uniaxial slot and does not apply when the action involves a shape with two axes. The difference between processing in the what and where pathways has been modified to include interaction between them and the inclusion of other modules. Some authors have also suggested that the dorsal pathway should be called the ‘how’ stream, describing its role in mediating action.

When the dorsal stream is impaired in patients with parietal lesions, they can recognise objects via the ventral stream but cannot use visual information to guide action for their use. This is known as optic ataxia. These patients have good object recognition but cannot use objects appropriately.
